Then the coin itself gets read. Pre-1933 American gold nearly always trades above melt because collectors want it, and how far above depends on the date, the mint, and how well the surfaces survived. A common year in worn shape sits close to metal. A thin mintage that stayed sharp can run several multiples of it.
